Hardscapes

Patios, walls and steps built to last.

Paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, boulder walls and big stone steps down to the lake. Everything built on the right base with the right drainage, so it stays level and solid for decades.

What we build

Paver patios

The perfect spot for a table, grill or fire pit. Dozens of colors and patterns, built on a compacted base so they don't sink or shift.

Flagstone patios and paths

Natural stone with a relaxed, custom look. Set in stone dust, mortar or groundcover.

Sidewalks and walkways

Front walks, side paths and stepping stones that get you where you're going without muddy shoes.

Segmental block retaining walls

Clean, strong walls for level yards, raised beds and slopes, from garden height to engineered commercial walls.

Boulder walls

Big natural stone stacked for a rugged, permanent look. A great fit for lake lots and wooded yards.

Stone tread steps

Large stone steps set into the hillside, down to the lake, the dock or the back of the property.

Fire pits and seating walls

A gathering spot for cool nights, with built-in seating so there's always room for one more.

Wall and patio repair

Leaning walls, sunken pavers, failing timber walls. We rebuild them the right way.

Retaining walls, residential & commercial

From a curved backyard wall that turns a slope into usable lawn, to tall engineered walls on commercial sites. Same crew, same standards.

Residential

Turn a hill into a yard

A good wall gives you flat, usable space for grass, a patio or a play area, and stops the slope from washing out every storm.

  • Curved, straight or terraced designs
  • Caps, seat walls and built-in steps
  • Drain stone and pipe behind every wall
  • Finished with sod, straw or plantings

Commercial

Built to plan, built to last

Segmental block walls for restaurants, industrial sites and apartment complexes, built to engineered plans and on the GC's schedule.

  • Built to engineered drawings
  • Geogrid reinforcement at the specified layers
  • Clean drain stone and pipe behind the wall
  • Tall walls, tiered walls and long runs

How a wall goes in

  1. Mini excavator digging the base for a retaining wall
    Dig out
Dig out and set the base

Excavate to firm soil and lay a compacted stone leveling pad.

  2. First course of block set on a gravel base
    First course
    Bury the first course

The bottom row sits below grade, dead level. Everything above depends on it.

  3. Crew member setting block on geogrid
    Geogrid layers
    Reinforce as it rises

Drain stone behind the block and geogrid tied into the hill where the design calls for it.

  4. Finished curved retaining wall with sod
    Finished
    Cap it and finish it

Caps glued down, backfill compacted, and the area finished with sod, straw or plants.

Built right underneath

What you don't see matters most

Most patios and walls fail because of what's under them. We dig out, lay fabric, and compact a thick gravel base in layers before a single paver goes down. Edges get locked in so nothing creeps.

  • Retaining walls get a buried first course, drain stone and a drain pipe behind them
  • Taller walls get geogrid reinforcement and an engineered design when needed
  • Patios are pitched slightly so water runs off, not toward the house

Hardscape questions

Have an idea? Text us a photo and we'll sketch it out.

Do I need an engineer for my retaining wall?

Shorter garden walls usually don't. Taller walls, walls holding back a driveway or a building, and most commercial walls often do. We can get the design engineer-certified when it's needed.

Pavers or poured concrete?

Pavers cost a bit more up front but flex without cracking, look better, and a single paver can be pulled and reset if it ever settles. Concrete is cheaper but cracks are permanent.

How long does a patio take?

Most residential patios take a few days to a week, depending on size, access and weather.

Can you fix a wall someone else built?

Yes. We see a lot of walls built without a base or drainage. We'll tell you honestly whether it can be repaired or needs to be rebuilt.

Let's build your outdoor space.

Winter is the best time to build it, so it's ready when the weather warms up.
